Baum and Hagen (1999) indicate that in order to reduce seasonality, certain activities should be implemented during off-peak times: such as adding events and festivals to attract visitors or identifying new demands for existing products and services by creating an alternate image for the destination at different times of the year. The latter is reinforced by Jang’s (2004) analysis using financial portfolio theory, whereby a way to help minimise seasonality stress, and thus the probability of perishability, is by having different tourism segments to obtain different demands for the services throughout the year. His findings hint at the possibility of an efficient segment mix via understanding that various segments of the population can enjoy the same facilities at different times, if you present a motivator that suits their attitudes and needs. These aids to solve the perishability problem can be easily implemented using the internet: change imagery for a particular destination to lure visitors at all times of the year, segment messages depending on the type of customer you are targeting and adding information of specific events to lift up sales for a particular destination.
