Key stage three and GCSE level music aims to make sure that the students are able to attain levels six, seven and eight of the key stage level descriptions. This means that pupils ought to be able to demonstrate critical judgements over musical form, content, style and genre and to perform music in a variety of styles that reflects this progression. In addition, pupils who are apt enough to attain level eight of the national curriculum must be able to show how different musical styles are influenced by the cultural context in which they originated as well as performing, improvising and composing extended pieces of music.It should be noted that the revised national curriculum does make special dispensations for students who display an exceptional ability to perform music – at a level over and above any of the key stage attainment levels. While this may be rare, it is certainly a consideration for the music teacher who is able to locate any student who can display empathy with other performers in addition to a “consistency of style and a degree of individuality.” (National Curriculum in Action Website) Thus, in the final analysis, it can be seen that the changes to the national curriculum and the key stages, while clearly impacting upon the day‑to‑day job of teaching, do not necessarily confine the teacher to rigid interpretations of the national curriculum. This is an especially important point for music teachers who teach a subject that in many ways cannot be taught along such narrow conceptual, creative and artistic lines.
