Weir group is an international engineering company headquartered in Scotland but with operations spanning North America, primarily Canada, the Middle East and Australasia. The company has evolved gradually over time as its business operations have expanded to cover more product and country markets. This has had quite a profound effect on the way it operates on a daily basis, particularly with regards to its human resources policies and procedures as it has had to adapt to the changing environments in which it operates globally.Culture within an organisation is one of the most influential factors in managing a business, at an inherent organisational level. As a consequence, this is magnified when we take into account differing nationalities and cultures. It is also one of the most difficult factors to manage and change. In the past, and arguably, within many organisations in today’s world, culture has often been overlooked as irrelevant to the overall strategy of a company. Over time, more businesses have come to recognise the importance of this variable, especially as international or global business activities have come to be the norm, and the emphasis has gradually shifted to people issues. According to Schein, (1985), “leadership is intertwined with culture formation” and he believed that building and shaping organisational culture is the “unique and essential function of leadership”. This clearly is with regard to organisational culture, not national culture, but we feel it is important to mention because it is particularly relevant to Weir given the origins and nature of the company and the industry in which it operates. Its organisational culture and how the company is defined has an extremely important influence on how it manages the cultural complexities of the environments in which it now operates in and in our opinion, makes this task much more difficult.
